Food Lion Opens Third Green Grocery Store in Hope Mills, N.C., 

Food Lion will open its third Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified store in Hope Mills, N.C., during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:45 a.m. The first 200 customers will receive a free Food Lion reusable bag and a $10 Food Lion gift card.
 
“Food Lion has a long-standing commitment to serving as a caring neighbor and is dedicated to being a strong corporate citizen in the communities in which we operate,” said Kyle Mitchell, vice president of store development for Delhaize America South. “We are committed to protecting the environment and reducing energy consumption through green building construction.”

Key community members expected to attend the grand opening festivities include Fayetteville Mayor Tony Chavonne and Jack Britt High School Principal Denise Garison. The Jack Britt High School marching band and varsity cheerleaders will also attend.

Food Lion’s new LEED store will feature a number of environmentally friendly features, including:

1.    LED lighting in the frozen food cases
2.   Bike racks and preferred parking for carpool vehicles
3.   Low-flow and sensor-activated water fixtures in restrooms
4.  Native plant species that eliminate irrigation requirements
5.   Enhanced air quality for associates and customers by using low-toxicity materials and implementing proactive management plans throughout construction to ensure optimal indoor air quality
6.  Environmental education via a kiosk in the store
7.   Purchasing a significant amount of building materials manufactured within 500 miles of each location to boost local economies and reduce energy expended on transportation
8.  Waste management plans to divert construction waste from landfills through recycling

          9. Customer and associate recycling programs at the store
